Hi! I'm Ms. Nichols. I'm thrilled be here teaching AP World History, World History, and Debate. I grew up in a small town in Texas, and have been obsessed with history since my 8th grade US History teacher brought it to life for us, by serving earl grey tea in celebration of the Boston Tea Party. I have an MLitt in Scottish History from the University of Glasgow, and a BA in History from the University of Texas. After graduating from UT in May 2016, I moved to Glasgow for fifteen months. Scotland was fun! I traveled a lot, looked over lesson plans when 17th century diaries were too much, and completed a dissertation I had the privilege of presenting at a conference.
I am a teacher because I did debate in high school. I spent more weekends at high schools around the state than I did with my own parents. My debate coach (The fabulous Mrs. Melton) passed away from metastatic melanoma at the end of my freshman year of college, and rather than writing the 10 page paper for my religious studies final, I cried a lot and researched the UTeach-Liberal Arts program. My philosophy of teaching is simple: I want students to find something in the material they are passionate about. At the end of the day, at the end of the unit, at the end of the year, I want them to find something that they can talk about and smile because history is just that cool. I hope to help them find that something. How do I hope to accomplish this? Primary sources. And looking at history from more than just the winner's side. How did women experience the Enlightenment? (Ask Mary Wollstonecraft, and ask me why she's problematic) Were there black people in medieval Europe? (spoiler alert: yes.)
Advanced Placement World History is a college level class. Lectures will be intense, primary source documents will be abundant, tests will be difficult, writing assignments will be often, but I will do my absolute best to prepare you for the exam and help you pass it. Anytime my door is open, come in and chat. Let's talk about history. Let's talk about what makes an A-level essay. Let's make it to Thursday, May 16th.
